The Combadi Insight:

You'll fall in love with the Dalmatian coast, sailing through some of the clearest waters of the world and biking through lush Mediterranean countryside and medieval towns!

Holiday Code: AL3

Explore the Dalmatian coast of Croatia with this combined holiday that includes cycling and sailing in the beautiful Adriatic sea! Beginning with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik, Croatia, this tour will take guests through some of the most unique and scenic locales along southern Croatia.

Starting off from Dubrovnik, your Mediterranean sailing trip will include stops along the Croatian islands of Šipan, Korčula, Hvar, Mljet, Lastovo and Pelješac where you'll disembark to go island exploring with your mountain bikes. You'll ride along coastal roads, winemaking regions, quaint villages and harbors, as well as through a Croatian national park and to the Monastery Island of the Holy Maria.

You'll also cross the Bosnian border by bus, to the medieval town of Počitelj with its cobbled streets and well preserved fortress. In Mostar, you'll pass over the town’s world-famous landmark - a bridge across the River Neretva. Both the bridge and the old town are UNESCO World Heritage sites!

Your bike tour will require a basic fitness level from participants as the tour length averages anywhere from 30 - 70 km a day, through hilly and mountainous terrain, 300-700 meters above sea-level. You can also choose to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend onboard the boat. Full board is also provided, as the onboard cook prepares breakfasts and two warm meals a day,

Day 1

(Sun) Embarkation at Dubrovnik – Šipan Island Individual journey to Dubrovnik. Check-in on board starts between 14.00 and 14.30 hrs at Gruž, the town port. At 15.00, a guided tour through Dubrovnik is offered, where we learn interesting details of the town’s history and visit the most important sites, such as the Roland, the city walls or the Franciscan monastery. Around 18.00 hrs, our tour begins with a short crossing to Šipan, the largest of the Elaphite Islands. We spend your fist night in the quiet harbour of Suđurađ.

Day 2

(Mon) Pelješac Peninsula (approx. 50 km / 31 mi. and 850 m / 2780 ft. of altitude by bicycle) In the morning the ship takes us to the ferry harbour Prapratno on the Peninsula of Pelješac. Pelješac is already impressive from far away with the 3280 ft./ 1.000m high Sv. Ilja massif. The lovely wines named Plavac and Dingač originate from here and its local winegrowing area. Today's bicycle ride takes us from Prapratno to Trstenik, where the boat will wait for us with a delicious lunch. On unpaved roads we bike uphill to the ridge of the peninsula. After passing a wind park we make our way back to the sea through a canyon. Followed by another uphill and downhill we reach Trstenik. For our overnight stay, we then cross over by boat from Trstenik to Sučuraj at the eastern point of Hvar Island.

Day 3

(Tue) Ploče – Mostar – Ploče (approx. 25 km / 16 mi. by bicycle) After a short boat passage to Ploče at the delta of the Neretva River, we continue by transfer bus, which takes us first across the Bosnian border to Počitelj. A guided tour familiarizes us with the location and its well-preserved fortress before continuing our ride to Mostar. The town’s world-famous landmark is the bridge across the River Neretva, which was destroyed in 1993 through heavy shelling and reopened in 2004. The bridge and the Old Town are since 2005 part of the UNESCO World Heritage. In the end of our excursion we are free to bike the last miles along the Neretva river back to the ship.

Day 4

(Wed) Island of Korčula and Lastovo (approx. 50 km / 31 mi. and 700 m / 2300 ft. of altitude by bicycle) After the crossing to Korčula Island we disembark at Prigradica and bike to Brna, where we meet up with the ship for lunch. While biking on numerous nature roads we always stay cloase to the coast line which gives us the opportunity for a refreshing swim. After lunch, we proceed by boat to the island of Lastovo. Today too, there is plenty of time to go swimming off the boat. The island of Lastovo is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Adriatic Sea. Already Emperor Augustus appreciated the mild climate, and in Roman times it was even named “Augusta Insula” after him. The barely more than 1000 inhabitants still live today mainly from fishing the extremely rich waters, agriculture and viticulture. The gold-coloured white wine “Marastina”, known even beyond Croatia’s borders, is grown here.

Day 5

(Thu) Islands of Lastovo and Korčula (approx. 33 + 40 km / 21 + 25 mi. and 750 + 500 m / 2460 + 1640 ft. of altitude by bicycle) Among the Islandhopping-tourguides Lastovo is considered as a mountain biker’s paradise. After visiting the island of Lastovo by bike, the ship takes us back to Brna on Korčula Island. In the afternoon we explore the eastern part of Korčula which is said to bet he most beautiful Dalmatian island. In the late afternoon, we reach the island’s capital by the same name, which competes with Venice for the honour of being the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo. We have ample time in the evening to wander through the fabulous old town and its narrow lanes laid out in a herringbone pattern.

Day 6

(Fri) Island of Mljet (approx. 36 km / 22 mi. and 700 m / 2300 ft. of altitude by bicycle) Early in the morning we cruise to the green and forested island Mljet - known as the honey island. During the 12th Century Benedictines have established a wonderfully situated monastery on this island. The pine forest is known as one of the most impressing of the whole Mediterranean - It is said that Odysseus stayed there for seven years. Today the area is a national park and a highlight of every Dalmatian trip. We have enough time to explore the national park using small trails, as well as to visit the “Monastery Island of the Holy Maria” and finally of course we may take a swim. In the afternoon we cycle through the partly dense forest across the island from Pomena to the ferry harbour of Sobra. Here we will be expected by our ship to take us to the Island of Šipan.

Day 7

(Sat) Island of Šipan and mainland Slano – Zaton (approx. 17 + 20 km / 6 + 12 mi. and 300 + 450 m / 980 + 1500 ft by bicycle) A pleasant bike trip takes us after breakfast past the sumptuous villas of Dubrovnik’s rich and noble citizens and on through the verdant forests, fertile valleys and subtropical parks of Šipan Island. We will not miss one singletrail that is offered by the island. Afterwards, we set out on a short crossing to Slano on the mainland. In the afternoon a last MTB ride through the interior takes us to Zaton. The last evening before disembarkation is traditionally spent in a cheerful get-together of passengers, crew and tour guides.

Guided Tour

This tour is guided in German and English.

Requirements (Level 2-3)

The bike tours require a basic level of fitness from participants, which they should have acquired from steady cycling. The tours will take us up to a height of between 300 and 700 m above sea-level. The day tours from 18,5 – 43,5 mi. (30 to 70 km) will take us through hilly and mountainous terrain and will be completed without any time constraints. Participants will also need to master long and steep climbs, during which they are, however, also permitted to push their bikes. The down hills are partly challenging and adequate technical skills are required.

You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned bike tour. We will traverse asphalted roads, which are rarely traveled on outside the holiday seasons, as well as unpaved roads and single trails. Each day you can either decide to bike alone, using the information and maps provided, or join the two tour guides or other participants.

Helmet Use

Helmet use is mandatory on all bike rides. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet. Rental bike helmets are available on board in limited number (reservation requested).

The cook on board is a member of the crew and prepares the breakfast and two warm meals a day. The full board starts with the dinner on the arrival day and ends with the breakfast on the departure day.
