Hike through Greece, in this 8 day trekking program that offers a selection of the best treks through the most beautiful and most historical mountains and locations in the western Thessaly. It is a combination of beautiful walks, mountain ascents and cultural / historical experiences designed to inspire and refresh you.

From mythical Mt. Olympus, Mt. Kissavos and Mt. Pelion, this guided walking experience has it all! There isn't a more enchanting combination of mountains & sea, history & culture

This is a trekking holiday, meaning that we move from place to place on foot, following well selected walking routes and staying in traditional high quality local pensions and hotels. There is no better way to reach the heart of the region and discover the authentic local people, food, culture and history.

The walks are guided, while a support vehicle carries your extra luggage and meets you at the end of your walk. The walks we will do each day will vary from easy to moderate/challenging (see the 'Itinerary/schedule' section for more details).

Your trip is organized by the trekking specialist of the region and supported by professional local guides, (and very committed to responsible tourism!), so you can be assured every detail is taken care of!

Day 1

A welcome meal and drinks await when you arrive in your hotel in Ambelakia. Here, we will meet our guides for the next days’ adventures. We are free to explore the village or relax in our room for the remainder of the day. Get ready, because tomorrow a memorable journey will unfold!

Day 2

We leave early for Litochoro today. Located at the eastern base of Mt. Olympus, you'll experience astonishing views of the Aegean Sea and towering summits of the mountain of the Gods. We will continue traveling on the road until we reach Prionia at 1100 meters. From hereon, we will start walking up to the Mountain Refuge B or Spilios Agapitos at 2100 meters.

Duration of walk: 3 to 3.5 hours

Walking Difficulty: Moderate

A nice light meal and a well-deserved rest are waiting for you in this beautiful spot. Soak up the atmosphere and recharge. We will walk for another 2 to 3 hours soon after, to reach the meadow of the nine Muses (the Muses’ Plateau) at 2650 meters.

We will conclude the night in one of the two mountain refuges on the plateau.

Day 3

Mytikas - Ambelakia

We’ll start the fun-filled day early as we ascend from the plateau to the highest peak of the mountain Mytikas at 2917 meters. We will be greeted by the spectacular sunrise, perhaps the most majestic we’ve ever witnessed. you'll experience this magnificent sight standing one of the highest points of Greece – the home of the ancient Gods of Olympus, and the second highest peak in the Balkans.

We go up the summit via the “Louki” route (east face) and come down via the “Kakoskala” route (south ridge), admiring the view in the process.

At around 12:30, we should be back at the refuge Spilios Agapitos to get some rest. Filled with great emotions after today’s amazing climb, we return back to where we started, the Prionia location. From there, we will be transferred by road back to Ambelakia and your accommodation.

Duration of walk: 6.5 hours.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

Day 4

Ambelakia – Rapsani – Mt. Kissavos

Following breakfast, we will visit the famous Schwartz Museum, which will introduce us to the affluent culture and history of the area. A professional tour guide will be with us during this trip. Before noon, we will hit the road to reach the wine growing village of Rapsani on the slopes of Lower Olympus at the other side of the Tempe valley, just opposite Ambelakia. From Rapsani, we will follow a trail that will take us along and over the cliffs of the Tempe Valley and onto the Pinios River. This is an elevated crossing of the valley with stunning views of the river down below and Mt. Kissavos, all the way along the trek.

We will then return to our accommodation on the eastern slopes of Mt. Kissavos, the Hotel Dohos.

Duration of walk: 2.5 to 3 hours.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Day 5

Mt. Kissavos

We say goodbye to our pension today and pass by the forest dirt road to the location where the Kalypso canyon is, on the thickly forested eastern ramps of Mt. Kissavos (20 minutes from Dohos). A short walk up the side of the canyon for about 15 minutes will enable us to reach the great waterfall and pool. After admiring the 75-meter waterfall, taking photos, and swimming in the pool, we will return to our vehicle to continue by dirt road to the Kanalos location at 1604 meters.

From here, we will indulge in a relatively easy 2-hour ascent to the peak of Mt. Kissavos at 1978 meters. At the summit, we will have a light lunch and hot drinks before an impressive backdrop. Higher Olympus dominates the north, Mt. Pelion the south, the Thessalian plain and the Pindus range in the far distance to the west and the Aegean Sea to the east.

On a clear and sunny day, Mt. Athos can be seen in the far distance, rising above the sea. After this marvelous journey, we will head back to our vehicle and travel for another 1.15 hours downhill. We will continue crossing the road until we reach our final destination for the day, the village of Metaxochori – located at the southern most section of Mt. Kissavos’ feet. Metaxochori's claim to fame is its traditional silk production (19th and beginning of the 20th century) as well as the town's architecture. Another must-visit attraction is “Archodiko Soulioti”, where we sample the local delicacies and experience local hospitality.

Day 6

Veneton - Sourvia

We will depart from Metaxochori and Kissavos to explore another amazing destination – the village of Veneton. But, before reaching the quaint village, we will be passing by the road that will take us through breathtaking views of Mt. Mavrovouni, Pelion’s natural continuation to the north and Kissavos’s to the south.

At 200 meters, Veneton will be the starting point of today’s walk. Just before reaching Veneton, we will make a quick stopover at Keramidi for a drink at its beautiful square. The Pelion architectural elements are very unique. From Veneton, the path takes us to the monastery of Flamouri at 540 meters first, where we rest and have a light lunch at its hospitable yard in a remarkable setting. We will then continue to Sourvia at 670 meters, where the ruined monastery is situated.

The walking route as well as the natural environment are quite diverse than what we have experienced up to now. Low vegetation and great views towards the sea at first, and then dense birch and oak tree forests. The first part of the route progresses on the eastern slopes of north Pelion to Flamuri and then goes across towards the west to Sourvia. We camp out at Sourvia.

Duration of walk: approximately 5 hours.

Walking Difficulty: Easy to moderate.

Day 7

Panagia Letsiani - Ambelakia

We’ll have the option to take a minibus (15 minutes) on dirt road or walk (40 minutes) to our next target location, Panagia Letsiani at 480 meters. From here, we will traverse the southwest side of Pelion climbing up to 800 meters, and then slowly descend to the popular Village of Makrynitsa at 550 meters.

Duration of walk: approximately 3 hours.

Walking Difficulty: Moderate

A sumptuous lunch will awaits at the lovely village square. We will enjoy traditional food while being entertained by the panoramic views of Volos and Pagasitikos gulf, the birth place and starting point of the Argonauts and their expedition to the Kolchis, the land of the golden fleece. We will then go back to Ambelakia for another 1.5 hour road trip.

Rest and farewell meal.

Day 8

Transfer to the airport for the return home.

This is the end of a wonderful journey. The unforgettable experiences will be perpetually etched in our memories.

Coming back is always an option. We will be more than happy to be of help to you again!

All included in the itinerary

Great care is taken in selecting appropriate accommodation for your holiday. Nights 1, 3, 4, 5 & 7 are spent in well selected traditional hotels and pensions as stated in the itinerary.

Nights 2 & 6 are spent in fully equipped mountain refuge and organized camp accordingly.

Meals and meal plan

This trip is organized on a combination of a full and a half board basis. On arrival day 1 as well as day 7, we all seat around the table for the welcome and farewell evening meals, which are included in the price. On days 2 & 6 you can taste the very good food that they serve at the refuge, and the cooked food at the camp (both included in the price). On days 3, 4 & 5 the evening meals can be taken either in your accommodation (they all serve delicious local recipes), or traditional Greek tavernas and this will give you the perfect opportunity to sample real Greek hospitality, delicious food and very fine wine, typical of the region (not included in the price). Breakfast is included at your accommodation and on the camping out day it is provided by us. Breakfast at the mountain refuge is also included in the price. Lunch pack is provided by us, taking of course under consideration your nutrition preferences, for the day’s walk, along with coffee or tea and cookies.

Transfers will be in minibus, taking you from your accommodation to the starting point of the day’s walk. The daily road traveling time ranges from 30’ minimum to 1.30’ hours maximum . The minibus will be waiting for you at the end of the walk, for your support and to pick you up and transfer you to your next accommodation. Your excess luggage (what you do not carry with you during the walks) will be transferred to every new accommodation by our support vehicle.

As for the transfers from / to the airport, the public transport seems to be the cheapest and why not the best way. The nearest airport is the Makedonia airport of Thessaloniki, 1.30’ hours by train or bus to Rapsani station being very close to your accommodation. The “Proastiakos” train runs from Thessaloniki to Rapsani and Larisa stations almost every hour for less than €10.00 return. From the airport you take the bus to the main train station in Thessaloniki. It takes 20’ to 30’ and costs €1.40. The buses also run in the same manner, although a bit more expensive than the train. They stop at Rapsani train station too. At Rapsani, we pick you up and take you to your accommodation at Ambelakia or Stomion, 20’ away by road. If you land at “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport in Athens, the train seems to be again the best option. Only the journey in this case takes 3.30’ to 4.30’ hours depending up on the train you are using. From the airport you take the metro or the Proastiakos train to the “Stathmos Larisis” (Larisa’s station) in Athens. Your destination is Larisa. We pick you up from the station. Taxi or mini bus transport can be arranged if you wish, at an extra cost.

Essential equipment

Apart from your seasonal clothing for the walks, you should bring with you the following:

  • A day back pack (30 to 50 lt.).
  • A pair of good walking boots.
  • Fleecy jacket and pullover.
  • Wind proof / water repellent breathable jacket.

Group size and staff

Maximum group size is 16 people and minimum 6. This trip is led by us and supported by expert local guides. Guides are not provided for clients not taking part in the group’s walking program.

Responsible tourism

Tourism has an effect on any area. It is essential to minimize the negative impact that we may cause. We do not allow our clients and staff to damage the physical environment, living litter or rubbish lying around. Anything we take in to an area, we must take out again.

First aid

Our guides are qualified in first aid and curry a complete first aid kit at all times. We are also connected with the Greek mountain rescue and the National Center for Immediate Medical Help.
