You can also just visit for a day, for a few ways, a few weeks, as long as you need & want!

The tribe is growing and is looking around the world for people seeking to be part of this project, this tribal sustainable community set to transform peoples' & local communities' lives.

An inspirational vision where a sharing society and connection with one's roots and true values is the common denominator of all the tribe's members.

The tribe's challenge

There is growing awareness of the challenges that we and our planet are facing and new solutions are emerging every day that address these problems. Tech innovations alone, however, are not going to fix our widespread over-consumption. Significant design and behaviour change must take place to regain a balance with nature, our resources and each other.

The tribe's solution

We believe in the power of real-life community experiences to positively influence us al towards living a more open-minded and sustainable life.

By funding and creating sustainable communities and sharing meaningful, fun and inspiring cross-cultural experiences on the ground and online, we provide a positive footprint for others to follow.

The tribe that is being built across an engaged, educated and passionate social network can make this happen.

The focus is placed on two areas that influence behaviour change: The head & the heart.

The Head: Data, facts, progress, development – these show us how far we’ve come and where we’re going. We measure the 10 building blocks of our communities as we grow: financial sustainability, water, energy, food, waste, carbon footpring, health, employment, education & well-being.

The Heart: Belonging, purpose, well-being, creativity, love – these values inspire us to see the world differently. We spend our time creating communities that make a way of living out of these values.

Together ‘The Head’ + ‘The Heart’ = action and change at the individual, community and global level.

How does it all work?

A company is first set up in each of the chosen community locations with local partners e.g. landowners. Initially the international team manages a lot of the local activity, and builds capacity in the community so that it can be managed locally as soon as possible. The location managers are supported by the local team, international volunteers and the management team and board. Weekly team meetings are held which anyone on location can participate in.

Anyone can be a part of the Montenevole tribein italy!

Exploring the Green Heart of Italia

The tribe has set up in an amazing historic location in Monestevole in Umbria. Umbria is the greenest region of Italy; full of woodlands, which have been sustainably harvested for the past 20 years.

Fancy starting your day milking a cow? Or perhaps a morning workout of kneading a kilo of flour and 20 eggs to make Umbrian cheese bread (a sort of savory panettone)? Or lounging on deck with panoramic views of the Umbrian countryside (the background of the “Mona Lisa”) with handcrafted rosehip jam, homemade bread, and house-cured sliced meats?

Take the farm education path, the luxury rural retreat route, or the agritourism and cooking class avenue... It all depends on what you want to make out of it.

The Monestevole tribe is a series of communities aiming to operate in a completely sustainable manner from financing to staffing and architecture to agriculture.

To encourage guests to participate in tribe activities when and if they choose, the tribe has created a pictographic daily schedule outlining all of the activities on offer for the day and the staff member in charge of the activity, so you know who to look for at the appointed time.

The tribe's goal is for its guests is to provide a vacation that’s relaxing at times, promotes health and provides a connection with nature. But you also want to have a collection of moments, of memories that make them feel different and stimulate them in a way a traditional agritourism wouldn’t. The best way to do that is through participation.

Mornings are usually slow due to late nights, but there are always short group hikes around the grounds or visits to the fast-breeding farm animals.

After lunch, a bit of a siesta can be filled with a nap or a lively round of the Italian card game briscola, much beloved by the men of Monestevole. They’re always keen to incorporate anyone who seems interested in the complex rules and stealthy communication necessary for briscola success.

The afternoon is when activities at Monestevole really start to pick up. One day, artisanal carpenters teach both the staff and the guests how to make a mud-walled shed by hand from local ingredients.

Another afternoon we may take a day trip to Gubbio, an excellently preserved medieval city nearby that rivals the better-known Tuscan hill towns both in charm, preservation, and attractions.

It’s not activity-oriented agritourism. Or a lux eco-retreat. It’s a home away from home, that keeps going while you’re going but is always ready to welcome you back like you never left. Even the first time you arrive.

Whatever you want to do – sleep in or go to bed early; drink and dance and party all night with Alessio; learn about local food with Valeria; befriend the local farm animals with Brad; or tour local culture with Filippo and Marisella – you’re welcome to because you’re part of the tribe.

At Monestevole we have 5 horses, 5 sheep, 12 pigs, 24 chickens (after the fox’s feast on Easter Sunday), 4 peacocks, 4 cats, 2 dogs and at least 10 humans.

Monestevole Cucina

Local crops include olive oil, wine (Umbria is famous for its Sagrantino di Montefalco), sunflowers, legumes, tobacco, and salamis and meats, including wild boar. Local breads are made without salt due to an old feud with the Pope on salt tax.

Food is grown locally, deep in Umbrian traditions, rich in culinary knowledge. The meats are grass fed from the Umbertide valley, the oil and jams, tomato sauce and vegetables are all from Monestevole. The wine is from the nearby vineyards. We plan to grow farro and legumes to make whole grain bread and pasta, make essences with fresh lavender and cure our own meats.

We also hope to plant sorghum and sunflowers for bio diesel and to make bio char. We are even going to plant a field of … chairs…

We cook together around the fire, eat together, and drink red wine together. Meals are usually followed by impromptu guitar performances and jam sessions.

Workshops

Carpentry, Ceramics/Pottery, Music and Painting from local artisans and artists. Workshops are offered to visiting tribe-members as well as being complimentary for the local community, special needs organizations and Umbertide public schools .

Bit of history...

Monestevole was originally built in the 15th century as a watch-tower for nearby Monestevole castle. Over the coming centuries, additional parts were added to the tower to develop it into the current borgo (hamlet) structure. It was used as a farmer’s borgo until the 1950’s when it was abandoned.

In 1997 Alessio Giottoli and Valeria Cancian purchased the ruin and restored it for the next three years, to launch Agriturismo Monestevole, equipped with a music recording studio. The property sits at 600 meters on top of a hill surrounded by 38 hectares of olive groves, oak forests and a vineyard. It is near the town of Umbertide, 40 minutes away from Perugia, and 2 hours from Florence and Rome. The tribe has partnered with Alessio and Valeria to re-launch Monestevole as a sustainable community in the green heart of Italia.

Climate

Umbria has four distinct seasons. Winters often see temperatures fall below freezing and at an altitude of 700 meters, snow is frequent. Spring is windy and wet. Summers are pleasantly hot and breezy, and Fall is harvest time. Dead leaves stay on oak trees throughout the winter and fall off in the spring with the new blossoms.

Local plants include juniper, wild brooms, wild roses, oaks, chestnuts, truffles, porcini mushrooms, wild berries and mimosas. Local animals include foxes, wild boars, hares, roe deer, porcupines, badgers, falcons, owls and buzzards.

Life at Monestevole

Up to 12 farmer's families (over 50 people), lived in Monestevole until the 1950s, each with their own living quarters in the main house. The Ferranti and Taborchi family worked the land until selling it to Alessio and Valeria in 1997. They made oil, wine, and grew staple crops to feed their cows, pigs, chickens and donkeys.

Notes

We strive to be sustainable using solar panels for electricity and hot water and heat, we harvest our rain water to flush the toilets, we have energy saving appliances, cook using induction heat, grow most of our fuits and vegetables onsite, use our own olive oil, milk our cow for milk and cheeses, eat eggs from our hens, eat our own meats when possible, and when we do buy we buy locally from independent local farmers. Our wine is from local vineyards until we can produce our own. At the end of the summer we will be building a green pool and soon we will have wind turbines for energy.
