Travel by bike & barge: A unique concept combining cycling and a voyage aboard our comfortable ship. Cycling cruises are perfect for all who like to cycle during the day and explore beautiful areas, without foregoing a comfortable way of traveling. In fact, quite the opposite! Bike & barge tours are perfect for family holidays, small or large groups or couples and friends.

During this 8 day bike & barge tour you will explore the beautiful cities of Holland and Western Belgium (Flanders) by bicycle and barge: Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges await exploration and feature interesting historical features where you can still feel the charm of days long gone.

The daily bike tours will lead you through a variety of flat landscapes and along the river Schelde. En route, you can expect to visit many picturesque small towns.

Amsterdam-Bruges route (you can also do the the reverse; Bruges-Amsterdam)

We embark in Amsterdam and cross through a beautiful part of the Netherlands. After a short cruise with the ship you can bike along the winding small river Vecht—with its impressive mansions and country houses on the banks. The chance to visit a real Dutch cheese farm and the 19 Dutch windmills in Kinderdijk are another highlight. Onwards to Belgium via Dordrecht Province of Zeeland where we spend the night in Antwerp, the city of Rubens whose paintings can be admired in the cathedral. You will cycle from Antwerp to Ghent along the beautiful tidal river Lower Schelde. The destination of your tour is Bruges, the "venice of the North" with its canals through the medieval town center.

The ship is the premium barge MS Magnifique, comfortably accommodating approx. 32 - 35 guests—one of the most beautiful barges available for boat & bike tours.

AMSTERDAM TO BRUGES

Day 1 - Saturday

Amsterdam - Nigtevecht | Nigtevecht - Breukelen (ca. 15 km / 9miles) | Breukelen - Vianen

Get ready for embarkation and check-in by 1:00 PM. The ship will leave Amsterdam around 2:00 PM. We will sail to Nigtevecht. This is where we will start a short bike trip to Breukelen, along the winding river Vecht. Before sunset, we will leave for Vianen, a small fortified town at the river Lek.

Day 2 - Sunday

Vianen - Schoonhoven - Kinderdijk (ca. 25 - 50 km / 16 - 30 miles) | Kinderdijk - Dordrecht

Rise up early. Our biking adventure will start right after breakfast. We will cycle along a scenic route to silver city: Schoonhoven and further through the Alblasserwaard to Kinderdijk. The breathtaking views of the row of nineteen large windmills listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site will greet us along the way. We can actually take a break and visit one of these.

The barge will then take us to one of the oldest towns in Holland and an important intersection in the shipping industry, Dordrecht. We will dock overnight in the famous port of Wolwevershaven.

Day 3 - Monday

Dordrecht - Tholen | Tholen - Kreekrak lock (ca. 35 km / 21 miles) | Kreekrak lock - Antwerp

While having breakfast, our barge will sail to Tholen. Our biking route today will take us to through the forest area forest area, via Bergen op Zoom and then south to the inspiring Kreekraksluis.

Our ship will dock at the end of the dam. Hereon, we will sail through the port of Antwerp to the city. Antwerp is renowned for its diamonds and the native city of painter Rubens. In fact, we can find some of his paintings in the "Onze Lieve" Vrouwe Cathedral".

Following dinner, we will explore the old city center.

Day 4 - Tuesday

Antwerp - Temse - St-Amands / Dendermonde (ca. 42 or 56 km / 25 or 34 miles)

Grab your bikes because we will cycle out of the port to the Zeeschelde after breakfast. Our thirst for adrenaline rush will be quenched as we tread the unpredictable but exciting tidal river upstream to Dendermonde. Alongside the river is a stunning bike path, not to mention the impressive landscape around the Schelde. You will cycle either to St. Amands or Dendermonde – a friendly and quaint small town located along the river.

Day 5 - Wednesday

St-Amands / Dendermonde - Ghent (ca. 53/40 km / 32/24 miles)

Today, we will be given the option to tour St. Amands or relax in our barge while sailing to Dendermonde. From Dendermonde, the thrilling bike tour once again picks up at the river Schelde in the direction of Ghent – a historical city dotted with premier universities. During the Roman times, the city was built along the convergence of the rivers of Leie and Schelde. Its strategic location brought massive wealth to the city when it opened during the late 13th and early 14th century. The textile industry became one of the major source incomes. One of the most notable monuments in the city, St. Bavo Cathedral carries different architectural influences from different ages. Inside this worship center, we will find astounding masterpieces of medieval art, one of which is the "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck. There will be more free time in the afternoon to explore the city and shop for souvenir items. We will then dock at the lock in Merelbeke, a suburb of Ghent.

Day 6 - Thursday

Ghent - Bruges (ca. 45 km / 28 miles)

Day 6 will lead us just outside the city for our biking adventure. This time, the course will run through the lovely countryside of Western Flanders to Bruges. Bruges is dubbed as the Venice of the North because of its magnificent Flemish cities. The old center that was built during the Middle Ages is still intact up to this day. During that period, Bruges was the commercial and artistic center of the country. We will have the opportunity to see this marvel. Today, it is a fantastic place for shopping and relaxing.

Day 7 - Friday

Tour around Bruges to the North Sea, (ca. 50 km / 30 miles)

Our last biking escapade will take us along a quiet canal where we will find numerous poplar trees, small farmhouses and polder landscape. We will pass by the breathtaking 12-kilometer sandy beach, numerous cafés and the appealing dune landscape of "Het Zwin" (nature reserve). After lunch, we will head back to Bruges.

Day 8 - Saturday

Bruges

Our tour will end after breakfast. Disembarkation is at 10 am.

BRUGES TO AMSTERDAM

Arrival and embarkation in Bruges

In the early afternoon, we will arrive in the picturesque city of Bruges, popularly recognized as the "Pearl of Flanders". The crew will greet us warmly. We are free to go around and discover the history of the city for the remainder of the day.

As per the itinerary, but in reverse order.

OUR SHIP - MS MAGNIFIQUE:

The MAGNIFIQUE is 62 meters long and can accommodate approximately 32 to 39 guests. It sails under a Dutch flag and management. It completely modernized in 2010. During the winter of 2012/2013, the ship being extended to 14 meters with five extra twin cabins and a grander lounge area.

You will find a stylishly furnished salon with restaurant, bar, lounge with large windows, wide screen TV and WLAN on the upper deck of the ship. Two partially covered teak wooden sun decks with chairs and tables & cycle shed are what will greet you on the front deck. A whirlpool or Jacuzzi and barbecue are located on the afterdeck.

The lower deck has seventeen cabins: 11 twins (11m², 2 single beds next to each other), 4 premium twins (14m², 2 single beds next to each other) and 2 single cabins (8 m²). All cabins have portholes fixed for safety and security reasons, en-suite with shower and toilet, individually regulated air conditioning and flat screen TV with SAT-reception. Extra beds are available upon request.

BICYCLES:

Bicycles available are mostly unisex touring bicycles of the German brand VSF, with normal mount (ladies model). They have 7 gears, saddles (front or rear) are only available upon request and confirmation. However, we have a limited supply on board. To rent them is also optional. Guests are also allowed to bring their own bicycles or E-bikes (with no extra charge). You just have to be reminded that operators are in no way responsible for any damage, loss or theft of such bicycles. In the Netherlands, law does not require wearing bike helmet. We have helmets on board, free of charge, if you wish to use, but was not able to bring one.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

All cycling tours will operate under the General Travel Condition of Boat/Bike Tours, cancellation and confirmation included. We welcome children on board. However before booking, we must ensure that your child will manage a cycle trip of around 55 kilometers. Please also take note that children under the age of 18 years must be under supervision. Upon request, child discounts may be granted. Of course, you may stay one or more days longer on board. The interior of the ship is a non-smoking zone. Smoking is only allowed on the sun deck. As a safety measure, a statutory smoking ban applies in all cabins. Consequently, all cabins and rooms on board are non-smoking areas.
