Day 1 Arrive at Srinagar Check in at KaranMahal Camp, Srinagar

Discover the glory of the Mughal era

Arrive in the morning at the magical city of Srinagar, the erstwhile summer capital of the British Raj. You will be greeted by our representative on arrival and then drive to Karan Mahal Camp, which will take approximately 45 minutes. On arrival at the camp, you will be accompanied to your luxury tent, where the check-in formalities will be completed.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the luxurious comfort of your tented abode, as you soak in the genteel, unsullied surroundings of the camp, with sprawling orchards stretching out in front.

This afternoon, proceed on a tour of the famous Mughal Gardens, built by the Mughals in the Islamic style of architecture which was greatly influenced by the Persian concept of the ‘char-bagh’, four gardens, where a garden is symmetrically divided into four smaller quadrilaterals by axial walkways. Shalimar Bagh, built in 1619 A.D by Emperor Jahangir, is surrounded by a brick and stone wall. The garden is arranged in four terraces lying one above another of nearly equal dimensions. The fourth terrace was for the exclusive use of the ladies of the harem, providing them excellent views of the vistas around. The terraces feature beautiful stone chutes, carved with numerous ingenious patterns of shell and fish, leading to the reservoir with fountains and canals. The highest terrace also has a black pavilion etched with the famous inscription by Amir Khusrau, ‘Gar Firdaus rōy-e zamin ast, hamin ast-o hamin ast-o hamin ast’; “If there is a paradise on Earth, it is this, it is this, it is this’’.

Your tour of the famous Mughal Gardens cannot be complete without a visit to another architectural masterpiece of the Mughals, the splendid Pari Mahal. Once the royal observatory, Pari Mahal has a well laid out garden with spectacular views of the Dal Lake and its surroundings.

In the evening, just before sunset, embark on a cruise in hand-paddled traditional ‘shikara’ boats on the tranquil waters of the famous Dal Lake, cruising past canoes filled with souvenirs and patches of flowering lotus.

Enjoy the tranquil surroundings as you sit down for your first dinner at the camp, a feast skilfully created by our Chef.

Day 2 Srinagar - Paradise on Earth Unplugged

This morning, after breakfast, set forth on an exciting tour to taste the rustic flavours of this unique land. You will experience the villages, absorbing the daily hustle bustle in the homes of the talented craftsmen, weavers and farmers. You will have the opportunity to see the unique art of weaving the world-famous Pashmina (Cashmere) and Kani shawls. These shawls have adorned Mughal rulers, Afghan kings and members of the Sikh and Dogra dynasties. In modern times, they have become favourites of the Indian and Western elite. The workmanship is so fine and exquisite, it is said that the finest of these shawls can pass through a ring! Interact with the custodians of this ancient art-form and also visit the home of a master weaver. Each house in the villages has a traditional weaving loom, weaving being the main cottage industry of the region.

Continue to the vegetable gardens where you will enjoy seeing vegetables unique to Kashmir.

Following the village tour, you will be guests at lunch in a traditional Kashmiri home. Relish the variety of special dishes, showcasing some of the finest local delicacies made from ancient family recipes.

Later in the afternoon, you will set out on an experiential walking tour to the Old City of Srinagar with a special Kashmiri host, exploring the rich heritage of the area. Walk past beautiful wooden houses, old temples and ancient mosques. Admire the bridges over the River Jhelum, some of which date back to the 14th century. View the exquisite works of art in the shrines, built of wood, intricately carved in geometric patterns, with pagodalike steeples instead of domes. The most striking example of this style is the Shahi Hamadan Mosque with its finely detailed architecture. Walk through the by-lanes of the old city markets absorbing the hustle and bustle and the colourful sights of spices, copper ware and textiles.

Return to your camp for dinner.

The Dachigam National Park ranges in altitude from 5000 to 13000 feet and features an astonishingly varied bio-diversity. Following breakfast, guests may wish to enjoy our Optional Excursion ‘Retracing the Relics of theMughals’.

Unknown to the world, the grandiose Mughal Road, traversed by the famous caravans of Mughal emperors and their royal armies four centuries ago, takes one on a historic journey reviving the trails of the historic routes that Emperor Akbar took when he invaded Kashmir. However, it was Emperor Jehangir who travelled this road the most, after he was introduced to this “jannat”, paradise, by his father. Kashmir was one of Jehangir’s three passionate loves, the others being opium-laced wine and his wife, Nur Jehan. Jehangir would often embark on a month long journey in summer, travelling with his entourage on elephants and horses, at a leisurely pace from Agra. En route, one may see remains of the Mughal Caravan Serais used by the entourage to rest and water their beasts. The most famous and of historic importance is the Chingus Serai in the village of Chingus where Jehangir died on his way to Kashmir. The othermust see spot is the Noori Chamb, a waterfall where Empress Nur Jehan enjoyed playing with the glacial water. The highlight of this journey is the spectacular view of the valley from the Pir ki Gali, the highest pass in Kashmir at 11,500ft.

Relish a picnic lunch set in the meadows adjacent to one of the ancientMughal Serais amidst scenic and charming settings.

Late afternoon, return to the comfort of your camp.
