Ladakh, otherwise known as “the land of high passes”, is home to some of India’s most majestic landscapes. This remote corner of the world, still off the tourists tracks, has the most intact societies of Tantric Buddhists left in the world! For 8 days you’ll explore giant mountains, tour hidden villages and get to know a people whose culture is ancient and steeped in tradition. If you’re looking for an authentic and luxurious adventure in the Himalayas, this is the holiday for you.

The village of Nimoo, where you’ll stay for the first two nights, is a rich and fertile land that’s peppered with abundant green fields and apple, apricot and walnut orchards. Take a tour of the area with the head of the village who also happens to be a Ladakhi medicine man. When you return you can enjoy a drink while you bathe in the sun on the roof terrace of your stunning accommodation.

In Likhir you can savour the incredible panoramas that have been called the best in all Ladakh. We won’t forget to mention that these views can be enjoyed from your bedroom window - you’ll often be reminded that this truly is a luxury holiday. The monastery in Likhir is famous for its giant, 25ft, gold Buddha statue, and when you visit it you’ll immediately see why. Take a rafting trip across tranquil waters to the shores of Nimoo village where you’ll indulge in a moreish picnic before continuing your once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan experience.

Walk with your guide who will bring the historical village of Shey into the present with captivating stories and compelling facts. If you’re an early riser you can walk to Shey’s 600 year old monastery to join the monks at morning prayer. The experience is a spiritual one and will stay with you forever.

This is perfect holiday for families, couples (an alternative honeymoon!) and solo-travelers who want to get away from it all and see a corner of the world that few get to see.

Day 1

Delhi – Leh – Nimoo

  • Flight: Delhi – Leh G8 193
  • ETD: 0840 Hrs
  • ETA: 0955 Hrs
  • Class: Economy

Our journey starts with the flight from Delhi to Leh.

We will meet you upon your arrival at Leh Airport, mmediately proceed to collect your baggage and help you complete registration at the foreign registration center. Please take note that because of regulations at the airport, Shakti guides are not allowed to go inside. We will have our local agents transfer you to the village house in Nimoo. This is where we will meet our English-speaking guide. Travel time is around 1 hour.

A large village, Nimoo is found approximately 36 km west of Leh. It is tucked along the Indus valley down the convergence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers. Incredible mountain landscapes outline the village with fertile lands boasting lush green fields, and apricot, apple, and walnut orchards.

Our charming house boasts an enormous ground floor built in a ‘C’ shape around the patio, which is considered as the prime seat of the house to witness the stunning sunset while enjoying a drink on “the rooftop of the world.” It is recommended that we relax for the remainder of the day to acclimatize ourselves with the surroundings and high altitudes.

Before breakfast, we will tour the Nimoo village for around 2 hours. The owner of our village house (also the village Goba or head) will be our personal guide, together with Chinglo (in charge of water distribution in the village) and Ladakhi medicine man. This is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the interesting local culture of Ladakh.

We will then pause and then take our lunch before we head to our next destination – the Basgo Fort. At Basgo, we will find the three ‘Future Buddha’ monasteries built in the 16th century. The ruins of the fort featuring Islamic architecture are fascinating.

Overnight: Shakti Nimoo Village House – Fully Inclusive.

Basgo: 3295m or 10808ft

Day 3

Nimoo - Likhir

After breakfast, we will explore Alchi. Seated 69 kms from Leh and roughly an hour and a half drive from Nimoo, it is the only monastery in Ladakh built on flat ground. The temple was established in the 11th century. The Indian and Kashmiri influences are written all over the place.

Our next stop is the village house at Likhir. The Shakti Village House at Likhir is situated at the top of the Likhir valley, standing high above the monastery famed for its colossal golden Buddha. Likhir is Shakti’s only two-bedroom house and was chosen for its wonderful valley sights highlighting an eclectic range of glimmering snow-capped mountains. This will simply take your breath away. Where you are by this time is just a striking distance from the rafting point, monasteries and outstanding trails in the western section of the Indus Valley. The two bedrooms, terrace and sitting room will give us uninterrupted views of the stunning meadows.

Before dinner, we will enjoy a few drinks while admiring the view of the sun kissing the horizon.

We can enjoy our free time after a leisurely breakfast in the house. Go around Likhir Village and appreciate the beauty of the place. Do not miss out on the Likhir monastery that could help you rewire with your spirituality. We can also visit a school where we can mingle with more or less 40 monks. The remarkable paintings hanging on the walls, the spectacular 25-foot statue of the Buddha and the immaculate architectural style will leave you awe-inspired. After enjoying our picnic lunch, we can go hiking near the countryside. We will then return to our house for dinner and a few drinks before we call it a day.

Day 5

Likhir - Shey

Following breakfast, we leave for Zanskar canyon to the village of Chilling. It will take around one and a half hours from Nimoo to our destination. Chilling is home to metal smiths and is the only village in Ladakh that has produced copper, bronze, tin, silver and iron work to Leh throughout the centuries. We will also get the opportunity to see the local metal smith at work before relishing our picnic lunch.

Later in the afternoon, we will try rafting across the shores of the village of Nimoo, where our delightful picnic lunch will be served.

We will head to the village of Shey after lunch. This was once where the seat of political power of Upper Ladakh under the Namgyal rulers. The legendary palace, spectacular Gompa (with the second largest Buddha statue in Ladakh) and a massive inhabitation are the icons of Shey’s affluent heritage and history. The ancient village is perched along the banks of Indus River and is about 15 kilometers away from the main town of Leh. Shey will be our home for the next three nights.

Our new village house at Shey is fairly new to Shakti, but is otherwise over 100 years old and enjoys a location that is stone throw away Shey Palace, Thiksey monastery and the majestic mountains. The house highlights traditional Ladakhi style as seen in three en suite bedrooms with a large sitting room and kitchen for guests.

Thiksey monastery is one of the finest symbols of Ladakhi religious architecture. It was built in the 16th century and the monastery is home to twelve levels ascending the hillside that is the current lama’s private residence. Underneath the monastery proper are chapels and houses stretching down the hillside, where at least a hundred monks of the Yellow Hat Buddhist sect reside

We will move forward with our tour and set foot on the Hemis Monastery. This is an hour drive away from Thiskey Monastery. Operating under the Red Hat sect, Hemis was founded in 1630. It is famous for being the largest monastery in Ladakh. Both an educational and captivating experience, our guide will show us around while introducing the lifestyle of the monks and unique Buddhism traditions.
