Without a doubt, Richmond is an amazing city to call home.
But like any other city in the country, moving in has a lot of advantages and disadvantages.
To let you in on what it is like, let’s discuss each important aspect one by one.
The Good Side
Aside from its rich history and low crime rate, Richmond also has some of the country’s most polite people. Did you know that?
I’d bet not yet.
Let’s dive into what makes Richmond an amazing city to live in.
Healthcare
Richmond, VA boasts of a top-of-the-line healthcare system. In the whole state alone, there are already more than 100 hospitals. Quite a huge number of these hospitals are in Richmond.
This is one of the major advantages of living in Richmond. Hospitals are just about everywhere. And not only are these merely hospitals. At least 21 of the state’s hospitals meet the country’s highest standards.
Locals in Richmond don’t worry much about being hospitalized. They have the best there is, that’s why. There’s no reason for you to worry, too. You’ll always be in great hands, I’m sure.
A History-Rich Landscape
As you already know by now, Richmond is one city that is rich in history. In fact, it is brimming to the core with such richness.
When in Richmond, you are always a few minutes away from the US’s most influential. The homes of history’s very important people are accessible to everyone.
Fancy a tour of Thomas Jefferson’s home? It is possible! Then there’s the home of George Washington or James Monroe that are accessible. You can also visit the home of John Tyler without so much of a hassle.
Are you a history buff? Richmond is for you!
Low Crime Rate
Richmond is one of those with the lowest crime rates in the US.
This should be reason enough to move if you’ve been considering it. The crime rates in Richmond are lesser than any other city in the US.
It’s no wonder. Because if you think about it, the state itself has low crime rates as well. With less than 200 violent crimes for the whole year, it already speaks volumes about how safe the place is.
Are you all for safety? Richmond is it, then.
Let’s Not Talk Politics… Much
Some other places are more red than blue. There are also others that are more blue than red.
Presidential elections that happen every four years all look at these states. Either you win this state, or you lose this state.
Richmond in Virginia is much more moderate when it comes to politics. This is a good thing.
The locals remain politically-conscious. But they also make sure to balance it off with a sound mind. This is a city where political-related arguments are never fostered.
They’re discussed, yes. But these are not heated enough to break family and friends.
Beautiful Landscape
Richmond is beautiful in a lot of ways. It has thousands of miles of coastline. But this doesn’t stop here. The beaches are not the only bodies of water that are accessible in Richmond. There are also rivers.
Aside from beaches and rivers, there are the Blue Ridge Mountains that can easily win hearts.
The colors during fall are also one of a kind. Go ahead and explore parks in the city, and you’ll see what I mean.
Military Bases
The whole state of VA has a total of 27 military bases. All these bases are scattered across its borders.
It is no wonder that Richmond alone has thousands of veterans that live in the city. This is almost 10% of the city’s population.
And as you already know by now, the crime rate in the city is lower than the national average. So, if you’re bound to feel unsafe, throw that feeling out the window.
If there is one thing about Richmond, it is that you will always be safe. Trust me on that.
A Polite Group of People
The locals in Richmond are polite. That’s as much as I can summarize it for you.
When you are in the city, expect locals to greet you on the street. Whether you know them or not, they’ll greet you. That’s for sure.
This is quite different from a lot of cities in the northern part of the US.
So, when you’re new, expect to feel at home in no time at all.
The locals will assure you of that.
The Bad Side
No matter how good a city is, there will always be disadvantages. There are a few things in Richmond you have to know before you move in.
Here are a few.
The Traffic Problem
Traffic in Richmond can be terrible. This is especially true in locations where a denser population is found.
In fact, when driving in Richmond, a traffic jam can take away about 33 minutes of your precious time. And this is for a coverage of 6 miles!
Also, if you are thinking of driving from DC to anywhere in the state, expect to stay in your car for hours.
The congestion differs depending on the time and the place. It is helpful to always check updates. You really need that. Because at the end of the day, who likes sitting in the traffic? Not me!
The Curse!
Now, this is something that’s quite interesting.
Did you know that cursing in Virginia is illegal? This includes Richmond, of course.
And so, if you are found to be cursing in public, the fine may reach to up to $250. That’s a Class 4 Misdemeanor.
There are signs everywhere that say so. So, if you’re planning to move in here, watch your mouth, young man!
Weather Trouble
The weather in Richmond is always mild. It can also be temperate.
But if there is one thing about the weather in Richmond, it is its unpredictability. In a single day, expect to experience a change of up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. And that’s a lot of shifts if you ask me.
Summers can also be hot and sticky while the winters are mild. Snowfall happens in select locations.
Nuclear Plants
The state of Virginia has four nuclear power plants in total. There are two that are in Richmond.
Miles away from the city are also nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. There are also nuclear-powered submarines that dock miles away from Richmond.
If you are moving to Richmond, would you sleep well at night knowing two major nuclear plants are nearby?
This is a disadvantage, especially if paranoia sets in. Or perhaps, you’ve been watching too many movies, is all.
